IT providers often guarantee 99.99% uptime of their systems. If they cannot fulfill their promise they basically just say 'We are sorry' - or if you paid extra: 'We are really very sorry'. You may be able to get a refund, but is that good enough if your systems are down? By taking the responsibility yourself you can often get a better practical uptime
and much cheaper - even if you still outsource much of the actual work.
We will look at some of the hardware and political reasons why your system may be inaccessible from the internet - most of these we have experienced ourselves. We also look at how you can guard yourself against those problems - cheaply. Most of the solutions we use ourselves today.

Hans Schou and Ole Tange first became co-location customers in 1996-1997. They have has since tried more than 10 different co-location companies and more than 10 different internet access providers. Common for all the suppliers has been that their promises have proven to be worthless. They have themselves experienced all the common problems that you would encounter when you have a co-located server and an internet connection that the company depends on. They use Free Software professionally and are active in the Free
Software society.
